Renewable Fuels

At North West Recycling, we’re always looking to adopt innovative, environmentally friendly ways of managing our region’s waste.

Identifying and producing renewable energy sources is our next step as we work to create a truly circular waste journey through our facility.

What is SRF?

Any waste that cannot be recycled is recovered as Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), a highly effective alternative fuel source.

Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is a greener, higher quality alternative to fossil fuel and is produced from mainly commercial waste including paper, card, wood, textiles, and plastic.

Solid Recovered Fuel has gone through additional processing to improve the quality and value. It has a much higher calorific value than all fossil fuels or the more basic Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) sources and can be used in more sustainable energy facilities such as cement kilns too.

We currently produce 50,000 tons per year of cleansed, processed and shredded SRF, which is then transported elsewhere to be turned into pellet fuel.

Integrated Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) Production

We have recently gained planning permission for the development of a state of the art SRF plant which will enable the production of high quality Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) to provide infeed material for a pelleting plant on site.

All the waste from one site and sourced locally, helping further reduce Cumbria’s carbon footprint, Co2 emissions from transport, and reliance on waste to landfill.

The new planned plant will represent a massive step forward in terms of how the waste industry tackles climate change, reducing Co2 emission equivalencies of burning coal from 3000 kilos per ton to only 108 kilos per ton via SRF.

The pellets are made entirely from non-recyclable materials including waste paper, cardboard, plastics, wood & textiles, and importantly contains no food waste or hazardous material.

Clear Green Benefits

This unique end to end capability will have three key benefits for the planet and for the people of Cumbria.

  1. Carbon Saving – drastically reducing Co2 emission through the production of SRF and the circular recovery of waste to high quality energy sources.
  2. Plastic Waste – using unrecyclable waste plastic for fuel stops it going to landfill and uses it in a more sustainable way.
  3. Cumbrian Jobs – producing high quality fuel pellets from Cumbrian waste will generate around 60 new jobs.
