Jeanie: Just Getting Started — and Already Making Her Mark

Not every story in a 30-year business is about looking back. Some are about what's coming next. Jeanie joined NWR mid-apprenticeship and hasn't slowed down since.

“It’s okay to ask for help — we’re all still learning here, no matter how long we’ve been around. That’s just what this place is like.”

Q: What does your day actually look like?

I take orders, handle customer queries, respond to emails and process payments — making sure customers get the support they need, whatever that looks like on any given day. In the summer months alone we can speak to over a thousand customers. It’s busy, but that’s what makes it good.

Q: What part of the job gives you the most satisfaction?

Talking to customers. Building relationships and helping people — that’s the best part. I’ve learned to try and help the customer as much as I possibly can in any situation, and when you get that right, it feels great.

Q: What made you want to join NWR?

I was approached while I was still in my previous job, but I already knew how fast NWR was growing. I wanted to be part of that journey — especially at such an exciting time for the business. Once I was in, the culture did the rest. It’s a place where people back you and give you room to develop.

Q: Have you been given responsibilities that felt like a real step up?

Yes — I’ve led multiple projects and taken the lead on training new starters. That was a big step, but really rewarding. Being trusted with that so early on said a lot about how NWR treats its people. You’re not just left to find your feet — you’re given real opportunities.

Q: How would you describe the culture here?

Supportive. Nobody here lets you sit there struggling — and that goes at every level. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here, people still ask questions, still help each other out. That’s just what this place is like.

Q: You joined while still completing your apprenticeship. What was that like?

It was a lot to take on, but working in bars had already helped me build confidence with people. I’ve always learned best by doing — being hands-on, getting stuck in. NWR suited that approach. There’s always something to get involved with.

Q: How have you developed since joining?

My IT skills have improved massively, and I’ve learned how to multitask far more effectively. I’ve also gained experience in field sales and selling face-to-face, which has built my confidence in a completely different direction. Every few months I feel like I’m doing something I wasn’t doing before.

Q: Where would you like to take things from here?

I’d love to get more involved in the aggregates side of the business — there’s so much growth there. And longer term, I want to move into a Team Leader role. I’ve seen what’s possible here in just twenty months. That makes you want to keep going.

Q: What advice would you give a new starter?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Nobody here expects you to know everything — we’re all still learning, no matter how long we’ve been here. Just get stuck in and ask.
