What is gasification?

A simple guide to gasification and its benefits

Gasification is a process that converts solid or liquid fuels into a gaseous fuel called “syngas”. This is done by oxidizing the fuel, creating a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and other volatile gases.

The syngas produced can then be burned as a fuel in a gas turbine. It can also be used as a feedstock for further chemical processing to produce fuels like diesel, methanol, and hydrogen.

It is a versatile technology that can use a wide range of feedstocks, including coal, petroleum coke, biomass, and waste materials, making it a potential solution for producing clean and renewable energy from waste materials that would otherwise contribute to landfills or pollution.

The process has several benefits, including:

  1. Increased energy efficiency. It allows for the production of more energy from a given amount of fuel than traditional combustion processes.
  2. Flexibility in fuel source. The process can be used with a variety of feedstocks, including coal, biomass, and waste materials, making it a versatile technology for energy production.

  5. Waste management. In addition, it can be used as an alternative to landfilling or incineration for the disposal of waste materials, reducing waste management costs and environmental impacts.
  6. Reduced dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, gasification can help to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, making energy production more sustainable.
