Growing Together.

Thirty Years of Partnerships.

There is a version of North West Recycling’s story that focuses on the infrastructure – the 30-acre site at Rockcliffe, the 40+ vehicle fleet, the 150,000 tonnes of waste processed every year, with 98% diverted from landfill. Those numbers matter. But they don’t fully explain how an independent family business in Brampton became one of the UK’s largest independently owned waste management operations.

The fuller explanation is partnerships.

NWR began life in 1995 as Brampton Skip Hire – three people, Roy, Pam and Rick, a Subaru pickup truck, a skip, and a house phone. From the very beginning, growth came not from scale alone but from relationships. Early customers became friends. Local businesses with shared values became the bedrock of what the business is today.

Bob McKnight, founder of McKnight & Son Builders, was one of the first. Roy Allan and Bob shared a love of football, meeting regularly at matches. That friendship became a business relationship now carried on by the next generation.

That template has repeated itself across thirty years, and the partnerships NWR builds today reflect the same principles. “Consistency is what makes a waste management partnership work,” the business noted recently – and it is a philosophy visible in every contract. At Hoddom Castle, NWR’s team completed the deployment of a new waste management solution with minimal disruption – coordinating waste infrastructure across multiple bin store locations, ensuring clear communication throughout, and leaving the site clean and operational from day one. At Lloyds Motors, one of the largest family-owned motor dealership groups in the North of England, NWR’s new Front End Loader fleet now services multiple sites across the region on a fixed schedule – more space-efficient than traditional skips, less reliance on ad-hoc collections, and a consistent service across every location.

Not all of NWR’s partnerships are commercial. Working alongside Story Contracting and Heidelberg Materials, NWR provided grab wagon services and removed excavated material free of charge to support pathway improvement works at Eden Valley Hospice – three businesses choosing to show up for an organisation that matters to the community they all serve. At the Cumberland Show, NWR supported the region’s most celebrated agricultural event, providing recycling infrastructure across the showground. An excellent example of local people, many of them skip or Man & Van customers making use of the NWR recycling bins throughout the showground, all doing their bit to keep Cumbria greener and cleaner.
