Courage in business is rarely dramatic. Sometimes it simply looks like a family in Brampton choosing to do things differently.
It started with a straightforward observation: the stone and soil arriving at a family farm inert landfill back in 1990 still had value. That instinct – to find opportunity in what others leave behind – has shaped every significant decision North West Recycling (NWR) has made in the thirty years since.

As an independent, family-owned business, NWR had no national infrastructure to fall back on, no corporate safety net. Every bold call – building a 30-acre processing facility from the ground up, investing in glass and stone processing lines before the market demanded it, installing one of the region’s first Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production lines, and developing a bespoke wood waste processing facility to maximise material recovery and keep timber in productive use – was made without guarantee of return. “I helped build that SRF plant,” recalls Head of Site Operations Karl, who joined as an operative fifteen years ago. “It was genuinely new territory. We were one of the first in the region.”
That same forward thinking drives the breadth of services NWR offers today. Recycled aggregates and graded infill are supplied direct to the construction industry – material recovered and reprocessed on site, reducing demand for virgin materials and cutting the carbon footprint of local builds. NWR also proudly serves the farming community, providing compliant waste services, aggregates for construction projects, and specialist support for vehicles and machinery. A man-and-van service provides accessible, compliant domestic waste removal across the region, offering a practical alternative to fly-tipping and unlicensed operators, both of which carry serious legal and environmental consequences.

The UK Government has set the zero-waste economy as one of its five key environmental priorities, with a Circular Economy Growth Plan setting out how policy will drive change across industry. For businesses and local authorities across Cumbria, Northumberland and South West Scotland, the direction of travel is clear. The question is whether their waste management partners are ready.
NWR’s answer is already visible. Through school visits, the business is introducing the next generation of Cumbrians to the realities of recycling – what happens to waste, why it matters, and the choices that shape tomorrow. For local businesses, NWR provides practical guidance and a free waste audit to help meet obligations under the Government’s Simpler Recycling legislation. Since March 2025, all businesses with ten or more employees have been legally required to separate food waste and dry recyclables for collection, with micro-businesses following in 2027. Navigating that change is exactly the kind of challenge NWR is here to help with.

What are aggregate materials used for and what are their main benefits? Construction aggregates are often referred to as simply “aggregates,”. They are a group of materials that are used in construction to form the foundation of roads, buildings, and other structures. Indeed, there are several benefits to using construction aggregate materials in construction projects: […]
A simple guide to gasification and its benefits Gasification is a process that converts solid or liquid fuels into a gaseous fuel called “syngas”. This is done by oxidizing the fuel, creating a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and other volatile gases. The syngas produced can then be burned as a fuel in a gas […]

Thirty years on, the values Pam Allan brought to a kitchen table in Brampton still run through North West Recycling. Before the wagons and the processing lines, before the Rockcliffe site and the 133 -strong workforce, there was a kitchen table in Brampton and a woman answering the phone. When Rick Allan founded what was […]
Thirty Years of Partnerships. There is a version of North West Recycling’s story that focuses on the infrastructure – the 30-acre site at Rockcliffe, the 40+ vehicle fleet, the 150,000 tonnes of waste processed every year, with 98% diverted from landfill. Those numbers matter. But they don’t fully explain how an independent family business in […]
